The Music Calendar: Product Launch

The Challenge

Music lovers wanted an easy way to find live cover bands and local events. Existing platforms were either too broad (all music) or too narrow (just big concerts). We saw an opportunity for a focused, local discovery platform.

Our Approach

We built a full-featured platform from the ground up:

  1. MVP First: Launched with core features, iterated based on feedback
  2. Local Focus: Geolocation-based discovery
  3. Multi-sided: Built for fans, venues, and bands

Technical Implementation

  • Frontend: Next.js 15 with App Router
  • Backend: Node.js API
  • Database: PostgreSQL with PostGIS for location
  • Maps: Mapbox integration
  • Authentication: Multiple auth options
  • Hosting: Vercel + Railway

Key Features

  • Event Discovery: Find live music by location, date, genre
  • Venue Profiles: Pages for venues with upcoming events
  • Band Profiles: Musician pages with upcoming gigs
  • Social Features: Follow artists and venues
  • Email Alerts: Notify users of new events

Results

  • 2,000+ venues listed nationwide
  • 45,000 monthly visitors and growing
  • 8,500+ bands registered on platform
  • 15,000+ events listed to date

What We Learned

  1. Local is hard: Geographic targeting requires careful data collection
  2. Network effects: Getting critical mass on both sides is challenging
  3. Iterate quickly: Fast feedback loops helped improve the product
